After seven years together, Halley and Shannon knew they wanted their wedding to be intimate and joyful. What they didn’t plan for was peak cherry blossom bloom, a hot-pink hair transformation the night before, and an empty subway car all to themselves. As an elopement photographer in NYC, I’ve learned that the best days are always the ones that surprise you!
Why A NYC City Hall Elopement Was The Perfect Fit
Halley and Shannon had been together seven years when they decided to make it official. They live in Connecticut, but when it came time to get married, they wanted New York vibes. The vision was Manhattan City Hall, their closest people, and dinner at the historic Fraunces Tavern. Simple, intentional, and completely them. Some of my favorite moments of any city hall elopement happen before we even go into the ceremony room. Sitting together on that couch in the waiting area, bouquets in hand, the quiet mix of nerves and excitement right before everything becomes official. The ceremony itself was just the two of them and their parents as witnesses. But when they walked out through those green doors, the rest of their people were waiting with confetti in hand. That transition, from the quiet intimacy of the ceremony room to the chaos of everyone waiting outside, is one of my favorite moments of any city hall elopement. The look on a couple’s face when they see their people standing there gets me every time.
After the papers were signed and sealed with a kiss, we made sure to take plenty of portraits all around City Hall. I got to highlight the sweet glances the brides shared with each other, their beautiful bouquets, and their gorgeous white wedding dresses from Anthropologie Weddings.
A NYC Springtime Elopement Surrounded by Cherry Blossoms
After the ceremony, I was able to steal the two away for some portraits around the city. As someone who shoots elopements in New York City often, I know quite a few hidden gems. But sometimes the best moments are the ones you can’t plan for. We were especially lucky because the Cherry Blossom trees were in full bloom.
Every year, I diligently track the cherry blossom bloom dates near City Hall because peak bloom only lasts about a week. Like everything in New York City, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee. To our luck, the date they chose almost two months earlier landed right in the middle of peak bloom. It was truly the happiest accident.
And the pink details didn’t stop there. Halley had just dyed her hair hot pink the day before their wedding. She had gotten it professionally dyed earlier that week but didn’t love the results. Shannon happily helped her redo it herself right before the wedding. There was literally pink everywhere! The result was a day that felt completely made for them.
Subway Portraits & Elopement Dinner At Fraunces Tavern
One of the highlights of an NYC elopement session is always the Subway portraits. We were lucky enough to have an empty car to ourselves. It gave us the perfect opportunity to have some fun with posing and create images that felt playful, unique, and completely New York.
After portraits were complete, we joined the rest of the group for a cozy reception dinner at the historic Fraunces Tavern. The venue is one of the oldest and most historic bars in the city. They chose to host their intimate dinner in the Wine Room, which provided the perfect backdrop for the evening. Under the warm glow of the Edison lights, the night was filled with lovely toasts to the beautiful brides and a cake that said “Finally”, a nod to their seven-year love story and how special it felt to finally make it official.
This NYC City Hall elopement truly had it all: pops of confetti, colorful cherry blossoms, subway adventures, and most importantly, so much love surrounding these two sweet brides.
Elopements are meant to feel magical, and this one absolutely did. No two elopements are the same; you never know when cherry blossoms will be blooming or if you will be lucky enough to find an empty subway car. That’s what makes being an elopement photographer so much fun.
